On 6 February, 80-100 whānau gathered down at the pā field for our annual picnic. Matua Eli Weepu started our day with a karakia, and then the fun began. The sun was beaming down on us, everyone was covered in sun block and our kaumātua were all under shade. Everyone loved being together for a good catch up and a fun-filled day. [Read more…]

Kia ora Kāi Tahu whānau, ngā mihi nui ki a koutou. I hope everyone is still making the most of this weather. Much love to all the whānau, who have sadly lost loved ones in the past month, we are sending our deepest sympathy to you all.

A week-long Māori education course at Arahura Marae has helped instil confidence in Department of Conservation (DoC) staff from Te Waipounamu when visiting marae and working with Māori people.

About forty-five DoC workers from around the South Island took part in workshops on Māori culture and protocols.

DoC workers from as far south as Franz Josef to Nelson/Marlborough spent the week learning te reo Māori introductions, role-playing of Māori legends specific to Arahura, and performing their speeches and songs in te reo Māori. [Read more…]

Our beautiful Waitaiki is on display as part of the Hākui Exhibition at the Otago Museum. She will be on display for six months.

Carved by our cuzzy, Turi Gibb, he spent a lot of his time making this wahine ātaahua come to life in our precious taonga.

If you missed the unveiling please find the time to go see her if you are down that way – she is definitely a sight to see.

Turi Gibb also carved special taonga for our tāua which were made out of the same stone. Ngā mihi ki a koe Turi Gibb for all your hard work and time – it has all paid off.

Each of the 18 Papatipu Rūnanga were able to nominate their own te reo champion on behalf of their rūnanga. Te Rua was nominated for his commitment and dedication to te reo Māori on our marae, from holding the mana on our paepae to his all-round passion for the language.

Whakawhanaungatanga hui ki Arahura. Our kaumātua organised a get-together for whānau over Labour Weekend.

The purpose was to reconnect with one another and to learn more about who we are and where we come from. Tihou Weepu was able to film it and give a kōrero to the whānau.

On day two of the hui, we went out to some beautiful places and retraced the steps that our tūpuna took to get to where we are today – from Moana, to Kōtuku Whakaoho, to Kaiata and Māhinapua. It was intergenerational goal-setting at its finest. [Read more…]

A big congratulations to the All Blacks for bringing home the Rugby World Cup. It was an amazing event that for us resulted in a lack of sleep for six weeks, and a mix of stress and excitement. But there was never a doubt that our guys wouldn’t deliver the goods and bring home the cup again.
