Whānau Ora navigator

Kia ora whānau, one of my roles as our Whānau Ora navigator is to uplift the health and wellbeing of our whānau and hapū. One initiative I have started is taking some of our kaumātua to aqua aerobic classes at the Greymouth Aquatic Centre in Māwhera.

These are wonderful classes and I have had a lot of positive feedback from those attending and interest from others wanting to attend. It’s excellent gentle exercise and all are welcome to join us. I can provide transport up and back on a Friday. Class starts at 10am. Please contact me to register your interest. Phone: 021 721 917 or Email: [email protected]

Ngā mihi nui, Rauhine Coakley.

Each morning we would met for karakia and waiata, then split off to go on our daily plans. [Read more…]

During the school holidays Waewae ran our first Fusion holiday programme for 30 tamariki at Arahura Marae.

Day 1
The programme started with a karakia to welcome everyone. They stood to do their pepeha and we sang some songs – the kids were so sharp they even learnt a new song. After lunch we taught them some Māori games.

Day 2
We were so lucky to have two beautiful kaimahi come in for the morning – Tihou Messenger Weepu and his lovely sister Katherine. They showed our kids some games such as Kī-o-Rahi, Takahia Kōhanga, Pūkana and a game called Zombie. Tihou has always been involved with our tamariki but this time it was a double combo. To have two kaiako that were pumped up and all about our tamariki was such an awesome site to see, so a huge mihi goes out to them both and we look forward to you both returning. [Read more…]

A huge mihi to Rosemarie and Mitai Simon for finally tying the knot on 26 March. Whānau were seated outside Tūhuru waiting for the bride to be walked in by her father (Alan Stuart Tainui aka Dogger). It was a very emotional day, tears seemed to flow at every word spoken and sung. It was a very heart felt day, even the late Aunt Rose (Hinemoana Rose Tainui) was present in photos on the bridesmaids’ flowers and was felt in spirit throughout the whole day. [Read more…]

On the 24-26 February some of our kaumātua attended a Hui Fono in Wellington. The theme this year was Hoe-Foe-Fohe-Oe-Voce, Journeys of the Past, Present and Future. This hui runs every year and the kaupapa is about Adult and Community Education (ACE). Our tāua are the Māori kaumātua for Hui Fono and had the opportunity to visit Te Papa and take part in the back of the house tour (Taonga Māori), which was an eye-opener for them all. The tāua also had time to visit the Gallipoli Exhibition which was very moving for them. The Hui Fono whānau hold our kaumātua in high regard and respect for their tautoko to the kaupapa. The next Hui Fono will be held at Waitangi for their 10-year birthday celebration. [Read more…]

Māori birthing traditions

A wānaka was held at Arahura Marae on 19 March.
The hui was led by Kelly Waiana Tikao, who is a doctoral candidate eager to find out about Ngāi Tahu stories regarding conception, pregnancy and birthing rituals and practices prior to the 1960’s. Whānau gathered to listen to stories, waiata, karakia, whakaaro (thoughts) that were shared with Kelly and will contribute towards her thesis which will eventually become a resource for Ngāi Tahu whānau.
