Māori birthing traditions

A wānaka was held at Arahura Marae on 19 March.
The hui was led by Kelly Waiana Tikao, who is a doctoral candidate eager to find out about Ngāi Tahu stories regarding conception, pregnancy and birthing rituals and practices prior to the 1960’s. Whānau gathered to listen to stories, waiata, karakia, whakaaro (thoughts) that were shared with Kelly and will contribute towards her thesis which will eventually become a resource for Ngāi Tahu whānau. On 31 December 2015 at 11am, whānau gathered at our marae to celebrate the marriage of Miriama and Lance Johnsen – the first wedding to be held at our marae.

Whānau enjoyed kapa haka while feasting on a variety of kaimoana dishes.

Amber and Ari walked their mother up the ātea (aisle) to give her away to her new husband who was waiting patiently for his wife to be on the mahau.

A huge mihi to all the whānau and friends who travelled from afar to this wonderful occasion. Also, Miriama and Lance would like to give a big thanks to Te Rua Mason and Jackie Breeze for going over and above their expectations – ngā mihi nui ki a kōrua. [Read more…]

Whakawhanaungatanga hui ki Arahura. Our kaumātua organised a get-together for whānau over Labour Weekend.

The purpose was to reconnect with one another and to learn more about who we are and where we come from. Tihou Weepu was able to film it and give a kōrero to the whānau.

On 12 February, whānau and the Arahura Kōhanga and one of our local schools, Kaniere Primary welcomed the Department of Conservation and five whio (blue ducks) to our marae for a talk about these beautiful manu.

Everyone gathered in the boardroom quietly to listen to their beautiful call and we were also fortunate enough to each pat a whio. [Read more…]

The weeks are closing in, as we get closer to the opening of our whare tipuna. Members of Ngāti Waewae Rūnanga will soon find a list of teams on our Facebook page. We’d like you to select which team you’d like to join to ensure our opening day runs successfully. The teams will include catering, cleaning and car parking.

We put the call out to you all now and hope all whānau travelling home will arrive on Sunday 16 November as we start our busy week of mahi, or at the latest Wednesday 19. We plan to hold waiata wānanga every night leading up to the opening on the Friday. The time has flown by and we are finally going to see the moemoeā of our elders come to fruition.

The official opening is on Friday, 21 November. The dawn ceremony (blessing) is to be held at 6am, with the official marae opening pōwhiri to be held at 10am.
