Marae news

The Waihao Marae has had a variety of community groups visiting this month. We held our bi-monthly whānau meeting, conducted pōwhiri and catering for the American guests at Headford Propagators, hosted the ladies from Lower Waitaki Garden Group (who I should note all congratulated Maurice on his wonderful scones). Sam then ran a tamariki and rangitahi wānanga and we also held a kaumātua council meeting at the marae. [Read more…]

Liam Stoneley has successfully completed five years of study at the University of Canterbury.

He started in the month of the tragic earthquakes in Christchurch and stuck it out to graduate with a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree in February. Last year Liam also completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in te reo Māori and history. His whānau are very pleased for him and proud of his achievements. Kā nui tāu mahi. Tino pai rawa atu e tama. Our congratulations to Phoebe Williams and her team mates on becoming the Kayak Water Polo New Zealand Under 14 champions.

Along with her team, Phoebe trained four hours a day, over a two-year period to gain this title.

Phoebe’s great-grandparents are Joseph Te Kihi Te Ra Heath and Lily Heath, Her grandparents are Irene Boyd and the late Brian Wehipeihana and her father is Tom Williams. Nā T. J. Williams. [Read more…]

Chris Dickson and Cheryl Sim Dickson welcomed their second daughter, Charlotte Romea Rui Lin Dickson born in Miri, Sarawak on 16 April. Rui Lin means Beautiful Jade in Chinese. A welcomed little sister for Sophia.

On 31 March the South Canterbury District Health Board (DHB) visited Waihao Marae to consult with local whānau about their Annual Māori Health Plan. This consultation has traditionally been held at Arowhenua Marae but with their renovations well underway, it was held at Waihao Marae. The aim of the hui was for hapū members to give the DHB at least two local priority areas that need to be addressed. These priorities are then included in the DHB’s Māori Health Plan which is submitted to the Ministry of Health. Both the DHB and members of the whānau that attended reported the hui to be one of the most successful to be held. [Read more…]

Te reo classes

We have had a very positive response from both whānau and the local community to these weekly classes and currently have over 20 signed up.

Karanga wānanga

He karanga atu tēnei ki ngā wāhine e hiahia ana ki te whakapakari i tō rātou reo karanga. A series of Karanga wānanga will be held at Waihao Marae on the following dates:

  • 29 April – 1 May
  • 27 May – 29 May
  • 24 June – 26 June
  • 29 July – 31 July.

These wānanga will be presented under the korowai of Te Wānanga o Raukawa and will be led by Whaea Suzy Waaka of Arowhenua. Some understanding of te reo Māori will be required.

Our chairman Graeme Lane was selected to receive one of this year’s Waimate District Civic Awards. The Waimate District Civic Awards 2016 were held at the council chambers, which saw four adult volunteers, one youth volunteer and a local group recognised and thanked for their community service. Graeme received the award for his many years supporting Waihao Marae and for being the president of both the Waimate Pony Club and Waimate March Hare motorbike rally. Our thanks go out to the Waimate kapa haka group who supported Graeme on this special occasion. [Read more…]

Morven School

Our local Morven School has celebrated the end of an important era in the Morven community history with a school reunion that coincided with the school’s closure. Waihao Marae assisted the school in making this a successful occasion.

Marae visits

Students from Glenavy School and Waimate High School visited the marae in February as part of learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. Approximately 50 Year 8 Waimate High School students and staff assisted whānau with harvesting and preparing raupō for future repairs to our mōkihi.

We would like to thank Wes from Ngāi Tahu Māori Rock Art Trust and Sophia from Working Waters Trust for assisting us in this project.

The 2016 year was kicked-off with the Waihao Marae amazing race car rally. Thanks to Sam and Lesley for organising this event, which was a huge success. Hopefully we will hold another of these mid-year. Congratulations to Jo and her support crew who took out the event by being within one minute of the required times.

Marae visits

Waimate Rotary Club held their first meeting of the year at the marae, which included the judging of their spud in a bucket competition. Altogether 55 Rotarians and their partners attended this evening.

Waimate High School staff also kicked off their year with a teacher’s only day at the marae. This month we also hosted 75 students from Glenavy School.

Tōtara stump

A local farmer has reclaimed a large tōtara stump from the Waihao River and has kindly given this to Waihao Marae.

Christmas celebrations

Last year, another festive whānau gathering was held at the marae, where 127 whānau and friends attended our midday kai. Thanks to those who organised the day’s events, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Hui news

On Sunday 8 November, we held another whānau hui. It was wonderful to have everybody together at the marae again.

We also had the pleasure of the attendance of the Waimate and Timaru mayors, who took questions from the whānau in an open forum and then joined us for lunch. [Read more…]

Te Rūnanga o Waihao postal vote

Te Rūnanga o Waihao Inc has extended its nomination period to call for nominations for the appointment committee. These nominations must be in writing and addressed to the rūnanga manager, marked ‘Confidential’ to 26 Māori Road, RD 10, Waimate 7980. Nomination forms are available from: [email protected] and must be received by the Te Rūnanga o Waihao office by Friday 5pm on 22 January 2016.

Marae visits

It was a pleasure to welcome Craighead and Waimate High Schools for their excursions to the marae this month. All together 140 students and accompanying teachers and adults have attended or stayed overnight at the marae.

On Sunday 11 October, we held our annual general meeting. We would like to welcome Juliette Stevenson and Jacqui Brunton to the Holdings Company, and would also like to acknowledge Samantha Sykes in her re-election to the executive committee.

It was a pleasure to welcome both Waituna and Makikihi Schools for a fun-filled day at the marae.

We are looking forward to hosting more school groups this year including Waimate High and Craighead.

New carpet was laid in the dining room which extends the full length of the room. It looks wonderful and makes the area look clean and feel warm and spacious.

A huge mihi goes to our Sacha McMeeking who has just been made Head of the Māori Department at the University of Canterbury – what an honour. Sacha has some very big shoes to fill following Lynne Harata Te Aika. Her mihi whakatau will be on 29 June at 9.30am, so we should have some photos to share next time round.

Also, Michael and Pamela Stoneley (Stokes whānau) along with Mike’s sister, Christine Tidey were extremely proud of their son and nephew, Liam Stoneley, when they recently attended his graduation at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha (University of Canterbury).

Liam gained a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in te reo Māori and History. Liam is continuing his studies in Ōtautahi to complete his law degree later this year.  [Read more…]

We had an awesome day at the marae hosting our mid-winter Christmas dinner. We were lucky enough to enjoy the company of some of our Moeraki and Arowhenua whanaunga and members of our farming community as well.

“Ni hao” (greetings) were the words most used by a team of ten students fortunate enough to spend time in China just prior to Christmas. Liam Stoneley (Kāti Huirapa), from the University of Canterbury, was one of two students sponsored by Ngāi Tahu and the Auckland Confucius Institute, to spend two weeks in Shanghai to study Mandarin and Chinese culture.
