Te reo classes
We have had a very positive response from both whānau and the local community to these weekly classes and currently have over 20 signed up.
Karanga wānanga
He karanga atu tēnei ki ngā wāhine e hiahia ana ki te whakapakari i tō rātou reo karanga. A series of Karanga wānanga will be held at Waihao Marae on the following dates:
- 29 April – 1 May
- 27 May – 29 May
- 24 June – 26 June
- 29 July – 31 July.
These wānanga will be presented under the korowai of Te Wānanga o Raukawa and will be led by Whaea Suzy Waaka of Arowhenua. Some understanding of te reo Māori will be required.

Whānau events
The golf tournament is still a work in progress and tentatively set for September 2016. More information will be provided as date and venue are confirmed. However, if you are interested in participating, or to assist with organising, please let the Waihao office know.

Marae visits
Waimate Rotary Club held their first meeting of the year at the marae, which included the judging of their spud in a bucket competition. Altogether 55 Rotarians and their partners attended this evening.

Waimate High School staff also kicked off their year with a teacher’s only day at the marae. This month we also hosted 75 students from Glenavy School.
Tōtara stump
A local farmer has reclaimed a large tōtara stump from the Waihao River and has kindly given this to Waihao Marae.

Christmas celebrations
Last year, another festive whānau gathering was held at the marae, where 127 whānau and friends attended our midday kai. Thanks to those who organised the day’s events, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Te Rūnanga o Waihao postal vote
Te Rūnanga o Waihao Inc has extended its nomination period to call for nominations for the appointment committee. These nominations must be in writing and addressed to the rūnanga manager, marked ‘Confidential’ to 26 Māori Road, RD 10, Waimate 7980. Nomination forms are available from: [email protected] and must be received by the Te Rūnanga o Waihao office by Friday 5pm on 22 January 2016.
Marae visits
It was a pleasure to welcome Craighead and Waimate High Schools for their excursions to the marae this month. All together 140 students and accompanying teachers and adults have attended or stayed overnight at the marae.

Hui news
On Sunday 11 October, we held our annual general meeting. We would like to welcome Juliette Stevenson and Jacqui Brunton to the Holdings Company, and would also like to acknowledge Samantha Sykes in her re-election to the executive committee.
Marae visits
It was a pleasure to welcome both Waituna and Makikihi Schools for a fun-filled day at the marae.
We are looking forward to hosting more school groups this year including Waimate High and Craighead.
We also recently provided the venue for the Thomas whānau reunion which was a great success.

Marae development
New carpet was laid in the dining room which extends the full length of the room. It looks wonderful and makes the area look clean and feel warm and spacious.

Kia ora koutou, firstly we would like to acknowledge the sterling work that has been carried out at Waihao Marae by Steve and Derylie Boyd, office manager and Jill of all trades over many years.
Steve was instrumental in organising, leading, and helping with projects such as recreating and building our awesome new wharekai, creating and maintaining the Waihao website, Google group communications, Waimate Museum project (check out the website for that one) and Te Haumi – our whale stranding, to name but a few of our significant projects over the last few years. Not to mention the kaumātua trips, while Derylie ably assisted in keeping the home fires burning. [Read more…]

Annual general meeting
Our annual general meeting will be held on Sunday 12 October 2014. The marae opens at 11am, kai will be at midday and the annual general meeting will begin at 1pm sharp.

Rā whānau
Ivy Mairoki Patience Mary McGaughey, née Benson (Peneamene) celebrated her 94th birthday on Sunday 29 July.
Family and friends gathered together to celebrate Ivy’s big day and she was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers by Graeme Lane on behalf of Waihao whānau.
Ivy was born in Ashburton on 27 July 1920. She is the eldest of two children born to James Paiki Peneamene and Anna Crocker.
Ivy’s childhood was spent in Parnassus, where she started school and where her father worked on the railways. The family moved to Waikari in North Canterbury, then to Christchurch where Ivy attended Phillipstown School. Holidays were spent at her Aunty Hannah Benson’s home, where Ivy recalls gathering flax and making mats – as well as enjoying goose eggs and eels. The eels were caught following a walk of approximately four miles to The Box, where eels were caught both by hand and by the use of a whitebait net under The Box. Congratulations
On 7 May Te Rūnanga o Waihao member and former rūnanga executive member, Michelle Heath Young graduated with her Masters of Law with First Class Honours from the University of Auckland. Michelle also has a Law Degree and First Class Honours degree in Art History and Theory from the University of Otago.
Michelle has had a career in the art industry before practicing law. She worked in the banking and finance teams of two large national law firms, Simpson Grierson and DLA Phillips Fox. Michelle is currently a corporate counsel for ANZ based in Auckland. She specialises in leveraged finance transactions in the commercial and agricultural sectors as well as healthcare and retirement village financing. [Read more…]

Kaumātua hui
A kaumātua hui will be held on Friday 28 February at Waihao Marae from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
We will be appointing officers at our next meeting, as well as celebrating some great fellowship together.
See you all there. Travel to and from Dunedin and Christchurch is provided. Please contact office for details of travel. Tentative dates for our other 2014 kaumātua hui 2014 are June, September, November. Actual dates will be decided at the February hui.

Congratulations
Janelle Wilson (Ngāi Tahu – Ngāti Tūrākatahi, Ngāti Tūteahuka; Te Whakatōhea) recently graduated from Massey University in Palmerston North with a graduate diploma in primary teaching. Janelle, who affiliates to Waihao Marae through Jane Harpur and Arthur Gibbs to Pakinui and William Harpur, also gained a degree in Māori Visual Arts in 2012. [Read more…]

Waihao community dinner
This year’s Christmas festivities were the best and most memorable to date. Waihao whānau and long standing friends from the local community came together to enjoy an end of year dinner at Waihao Marae.
It was the first time in many years that the wharenui or old hall was used for a Christmas function. Although a few eyebrows were raised, it was quickly remembered that the precise reason the hall was constructed was so the Māori people of Morven and Glenavy and their friends in the wider community could meet to celebrate and socialise together. The hall was also used to assemble for more important and significant reasons such as seeing soldiers from the Waihao community off to serve during World War II. [Read more…]

Thomas reunion
Last Labour weekend the Thomas whānau held their annual reunion at Waihao for the ninth year in a row. Whānau got together and socialised, meet the locals, renewed acquaintances and kinships, caught up on family news and spent their days whitebaiting at the Waihao river and rabbit hunting. Grantlea Downs kapa haka group
Grantlea Downs kapa haka group performed at the recent Flava festival held in Timaru. Going into the festival they were the current overall champions. Grantlea Downs applied to Te Rūnanga o Waihao Holdings for funding for their piupiu. They looked amazing in their full costume and the judges agreed, awarding them first prize. The group have been to Waihao several times to perform for the whānau. [Read more…]
