It may be wishful thinking, but it’s starting to feel like spring is in the air. Kā Tiritiri o te Moana and Aoraki are looking spectacular cloaked in hukapapa and the air is feeling warmer, interspersed with warm spring showers.

We have had another busy month here on Poutini with the usual round of komiti hui and meetings keeping us extra busy. We were pleased to host Heather and Maurice Manawatu on our side of the motu. Our whānau had the opportunity to experience their hospitality in Kaikōura and we were more than happy to reciprocate, sharing our takiwā and kōrero with them, as they had with us.

We are excited to be using their feedback to develop our own experience right in the heart of our takiwā. Watch this space.

Everyone has been counting down to the start of whitebait season on 1 September, and by the time you read this we would have had our first (and second, and third…) feed of fresh bait.

We have included a members-only section which will allow registered members to access more information not accessible to the public. Please contact Rachael in the office to check if you are registered so you can receive a password.

The recently elected Makaawhio Appointment Committee: Paul Madgwick, Marie Mahuika-Forsyth, Terry Scott, Stuart Barr, Bronwyn Te Koeti, Paul Wilson and Barry Rochford have held the interview process and finalised the appointment. The committee are pleased to announce that the new Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu representative is Susan Wallace.

On behalf of the committee and rūnanga, we would like to acknowledge Tim Rochford, who has served our rūnanga for many years. We appreciate the huge contribution he has made as our representative and as a member of our Rūnanganui. We appreciate all that you have done and thank you for your commitment and mahi. [Read more…]

In May of this year the rūnaka traded in its old faithful “red” van for a new, more kaumātua-friendly “silver” van with all the mod-cons and very comfy seats. You can even make phone calls through the stereo, haha. Thanks to Marie Mahuika-Forsyth who also re-painted the trailer to match the new waka; well done it looks fantastic.

Auntie Barbara Vaea was commissioned as a kaikarakia at the chapel, Te Whakaruruhau, in Te Hui Amorangi o Te Waipounamu College on Ferry Road in Christchurch on Sunday 17 July. A small van-load of kaumātua went to Christchurch to support Auntie Barb. Congratulations on the start of your journey in ministry. [Read more…]

Whānau travelled down to Waiau – Franz Josef on Saturday 25 June for the official opening of Te Ao Mārama.

The building, owned by Ngāi Tahu Tourism, houses the Department of Conservation, Franz Josef Glacier Guides, Glacier Hot Pools, iSite Franz Josef and a café. Our rūnanga has worked closely with Ngāi Tahu Tourism, not only as a shareholder in the Glacier Guides, but also as the manawhenua rūnanga, throughout the development of the site and were thrilled to see some of the vision come to fruition. Marie Mahuika-Forsyth and Waikohatu Scott hosted a Pink Ribbon Breakfast on 24 May with a delicious and healthy menu of cranberry juice, fruit smoothies, breakfast muesli, yoghurt trifle, savoury bread-cases and bacon and egg muffins. Thank you to everyone who attended and to the whānau that gave a little towards this very worthwhile cause.

Winter is firmly entrenched here on the coast. Although we are not alone in experiencing the icy blasts, rain and frosty mornings typical this time of year, we have also been blessed with enough sightings of Tamanuiterā to salve the spirit – and it’s hard not to be impressed by the sight of our mauka ariki and Kā Tiritiri o te Moana at this time of year, cloaked in hukarere.

It has been another couple of busy months here on Poutini with the usual round of komiti hui and meetings keeping us extra busy.

Hīkoi Whakatipu Waitai

We are inviting expressions of interest from Makaawhio members who would like to participate in our next hīkoi Whakatipu Waitai. At this stage, no date has been set as we need a threshold number of participants.

If you are considering this amazing opportunity to reconnect with the southernmost part of our rohe and our kāinga there are a couple of criteria that you need to be aware of:

  • You will be required to make a contribution towards the costs of the hīkoi
  • You need to be fit enough to walk the 17kms on relatively-flat formed tracks
  • You need to be willing to fully participate in all aspects of the hīkoi
  • Rakatahi need to be old enough to be self-sufficient and self-managing.

Please contact the office to add your name and contact details to the list. If we end up with a surplus of participants, they will be shortlisted for the next hīkoi.

Annual Wero Mātauraka Reading Challenge

The rūnaka held its annual reading challenge for Kāti Mahaki tamariki in the July school holidays. All entries needed to be in the office on 4 August and we will be announcing the winner of the major prizes very soon.

Reading Challenge 2015 participants.

Its nearly that time of year again – the winter reading challenge for Makaawhio tamariki and rakatahi will be taking place 11-22 July. Whānau are invited to pick up the challenge and enter. It’s simple, all you need to do is read something every day of the school holidays and tick the form to acknowledge you have.

There are no rules around what you read, it can be anything (for example; a few pages of a book, a magazine, newspaper, online apps). You don’t need to read a whole book (unless you want to), just set aside time to read each day. [Read more…]

Queen’s Birthday weekend saw a range of events marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Westland explorer, surveyor and map maker, Charlie Douglas. These events drew a large crowd of dedicated followers to Hokitika.

The opening of an exhibition at the local museum launched the weekend, with the museum bursting at the seams with people. A mihi whakatau led by our upoko rūnanga, Richard Wallace and Makaawhio whānau preceded a ceremonial meeting of Te Koeti Tūranga and Charlie Douglas. [Read more…]

At the end of last month, members travelled to Waikawa Marae to tautoko and support the release of nine juvenile rowi chicks. The chicks were released into a new kōhanga site at the head of Picton Harbour, Kaipūpū Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary.

This is an exciting development in our drive to save the critically endangered rowi. The need to find a new area is due to the success of the kiwis from the ‘kiwi ONE’ programme, which has seen an increase in the number of rowi being hatched from eggs collected in Ōkārito Forest. As a result, the existing kōhanga island, Motuara can’t accommodate them all. [Read more…]

Pāmu Makaawhio

There has been good progress on our Makaawhio block since last month. Whānau driving past 855B will notice the huge improvement in the state highway fencing, with the completion of the new replacement fences making the section safe for the new stock being delivered.

Congratulations to Nathan Wilson, who has been contracted to manage the day-to-day requirements of the farm.

Makaawhio representative electoral ballot process

The recently elected Makaawhio Appointment Committee, Paul Madgwick, Marie Mahuika-Forsyth, Terry Scott, Stuart Barr, Bronwyn Te Koeti, Paul Wilson and Barry Rochford have held their first meeting. They have confirmed the selection and appointment process and applicant interviews will be held next month. An announcement will be made, once they have completed their process and the appointment has been confirmed by our rūnanganui.

The committee is in the process of being convened. Thank you to everyone who made themselves available and participated in this process.

Next up was our inaugural Makaawhio movie night, featuring a selection of videos from across the years – pre-rūnanga to more recent times. The session started with a “matinee” screening in Kaipō, before moving out into Poke for the evening screening, popcorn, ice cream and pizza. There was a lot of laughter and hilarity and great memories shared. We hope this will be the first of what will become an annual event. [Read more…]

The day dawned overcast with the threat of rain. Fortunately, the rain did not eventuate and we had a full house at our service, including a bus load of Australian tourists, who had learned about our service from one of the local cafés.

The service, led jointly by Venerable Richard Wallace, QSM and Father Michael Mahoney, included letters from West Coast ANZACs giving a poignant account of their experiences in their own words. After the acts of remembrance poppies were laid at our commemorative window before everyone headed outdoors for the wreath-laying ceremony at our flagpole Te Hokowhitu a Tū and included a wreath laid by local police. We managed to fit in a hui rūnanganui (executive meeting), but also farewelled Tāua Mata Holliday and her husband Ken, who will be returning to Australia to be closer to their tamariki and mokopuna.

Dinner, cake, waiata and speeches were the order of an evening enjoyed by all. They will be missed, having been part of a small group of “mainstay” kaimanaaki and kaitautoko for our marae for almost all of its 11 years. Nō reira, nei rā te tino mihi ki a kōrua. E kore kā mihi e mutu. [Read more…]
