We are excited to share the new plans for the rebuild of our complex. We have decided to extend our premises by adding an extra sleeping/meeting room. We have also extended our dining area and designed a new kitchen layout, and due to the new building regulations our ablution blocks have tripled in size. Our reception and meeting room will be the last of the remaining complex – we are glad that we get to keep these from the original building. [Read more…]

We are down to our last few health days with only three left for the year. We have moved these to the Salvation Army until we are back up and running. We are planning a barbeque that is to be held at Dolamore Park on 26 November. We plan to make the most of the good weather and summer season that is upon us.

If there are any kaumātua who you think would like to come along and check out what we do, please contact our office to find out further information.

Fire damages marae buildings

It was a sad day for Hokonui on 13 May, when our rūnanga buildings caught fire. The fire started out in our workshop at the rear of the complex. The workshop shed backs directly on to our ablution blocks inside the main building so the fire caused major damage to those also. Our kitchen, dining room and staff offices were also affected due to the fire raging through the cellings.

This means that three-quarters of our building will have to be demolished and rebuilt. We have been told by the fire inspector that the cause of the fire was due to a rodent chewing through the wires on the shed switchboard. [Read more…]

Ngā mate

Kā mihi aroha. To all our whānau, suffering the loss of loved ones at this time Hokonui Rūnanga wishes to extend all our love and sympathy.

It’s hard to believe that 2014 is already into its third month. It’s been a very busy year so far at Hokonui.

Membership registrations

We have a lot of Hokonui Rūnanga membership registrations that have out-of-date contact information attached to them. It’s hard to keep track of everybody and keep everybody informed without the right contact details. If you think you may need to update, please contact the office by either visiting our website www.hokonuirunanga.org.nz or email [email protected]

Nurse-led clinics

As of the beginning of July, we will be holding nurse-led clinics, starting in Gore and Mataura.

More information about these clinics will be available closer to July. They have been secured until July 2017.

Our new tamariki programme is going from strength-to-strength and we are getting new additions every session. We have moved the venue to the bigger Hamilton Park facility, which is better suited for a crowd of tamariki. One of the main things tamariki wanted to do while at the programme was learn to play the traditional ball game, ki-o-rahi.

With finer weather we were able to get the kits out and give it a go and we’ve decided to have a Christmas party for the last session for this year on 15 December. If you have a child, or know of any children who might like to come along to kī-o-rahi next year, please contact the office. [Read more…]

Congratulations

Last month we held a ceremony for students who were graduating from the Project K programme.

Project K is a 14-month programme for selected year 10 students, aimed at building their self-confidence and maximising their potential. Project K teaches essential life skills like goal-setting, self-reliance, perseverance, general life skills and teamwork. It also promotes good health and a positive attitude.

This is achieved through four programme stages including an induction, a three-week wilderness adventure, a community challenge, and a 12-month individual mentoring partnership with a trained adult mentor.  Throughout the programme the students are supported to set and achieve their goals.

It was a great night and we congratulate all the students who graduated and wish them well for future success. Many thanks to Mateka Pirini and Tui Puki for the scrumptious catering and help setting up for the event. [Read more…]

Solander Island – Kingdom of the Birds

Solander Island – Te Niho a Kewa – lies north-west of Stewart Island and guards the western approach to Foveaux Strait. The island is the eroded remains of an extinct volcano.

Terry Nicholas went down to the Solanders in May to accompany the research team from Te Papa on their travels. Michael Hall from Te Papa has written a very insightful blog Solander: Kingdom of the Birds which you can read here: [Read more…]

Stumped by prehistoric mystery
A huge lump of petrified wood has been fished out of the Mataura River. The lump, believed to weigh about a tonne, was hauled out of the Mataura River last week by a tractor after being discovered in a deep hole.

It’s about a metre long and is a significant find – one that has stumped local man and Hokonui Rūnanga kaiwhakahaere (manager) Rewi Anglem.

“There’s the petrified forest down the Catlins, but that’s miles away. What’s it doing all the way up here?” he said. [Read more…]
