Rāpaki fire destroys donated tōtara

Nā Ila Couch.

A fire started by a Christmas Day barbecue on the beach at Rāpaki has destroyed a number of native trees planted as part of a fundraiser for Te Wheke Marae.

Brian Downey and Rewi Couch, who planted the trees, spoke to a witness who said the use of an accelerant coupled with a strong sou’wester caused the grass above the far end of the beach to catch fire. The wind drove the fire up the gully, destroying regenerating native plants including nine tōtara planted on behalf of families who had donated trees as part of the fundraising efforts to build the marae.

The tōtara were part of a wider 2009 Land Management Plan using broom as a companion plant to native trees. “The broom provides perfect protection for the native seedlings which would otherwise die if exposed to too much wind and sun,” says Brian. “Eventually the natives outgrow the broom and the regenerating bush takes over.” [Read more…]

Wānaka Ora

Wānaka/Wānanga for our purposes, refers to a forum or educational seminar that we, as whānau of Te Hapū Ngāti Wheke, have an opportunity to participate in, and to learn what and why particular tikanga and kawa are used at Rāpaki Marae during formal ceremonies such as pōwhiri or tangi. The word ‘Ora’ reiterates what we strive to achieve as a result of having wānaka for example: that cultural practices at Rāpaki are alive, well, safe, and known by as many whānau members as possible. Hori Briggs turns 80.

Hori Briggs turns 80.

Hori Briggs turned 80 and his whānau came together from Australia and the North Island to celebrate the special event over a period of three days. On his special day, everyone gathered in the whare tipuna where they sang waiata and told stories of his early life in the South and North Islands, before moving to Australia – and later, returning home. His years at sea have put him in good stead as, at 80, he still holds his position as a customary fisheries officer. Over the three days, Hori could be found sitting with a smile on his face, as he sat watching and listening to his mokopuna and whānau. [Read more…]

Jordan is the youngest of Wally and Jackie Stone’s three boys and mokopuna of the late Priscilla and David Stone. He was raised in Kaikōura and is a very talented rugby player, playing in the halfback position. Like his older siblings, Israel and Jermaine, Jordan was a rugby representative for Marlborough before attending Christchurch Boys’ High School in his last two years. There, he played for the first XV in 2011 and 2012.
This year Jordan played for Christchurch Rugby Club’s colts team and was selected to play in their premier team as well. He trains with the Crusaders Academy and has also been selected to play for the Canterbury Māori Rugby senior team. Although only 18 at the time, he was thrilled to have the opportunity to play alongside All Black captain, Richie McCaw, in Christchurch and a highlight was holding the winning shield with Ritchie after their match.
