Lauchlan (Lochie) Wiremu Burgess was born on 1 September, in Blenheim. He is another son for Matthew and Kirsty Burgess, a baby brother for Taylor and another mokopuna for Marama (née Reeves) and Murray Burgess.

Wiremu Tainui Tahi (Tai) Reeves, was born on 7 October – a son for Wiremu Reeves and Hayley Voice, a brother for Charlie Jane and Jaxson; and another mokopuna for Billy and Dawn Reeves.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Te Atakura

Nei rā te owha – Nikora Wati

Congratulations to Nikora Wati, who was awarded the Most Improved Player for the 2013 season. Nikora played for the under 8 White Northern Bulldogs rugby league team. This was Nikora’s third year playing league and his second with the majority of the team. With this experience, Nikora grew throughout the year perfecting his “smashed em bro” tackles, don’t get in my way “hit ups”, scoring tries and perfecting his kicking conversions, helping his team win 14 games for the season. While Chantal Tumahai has a day job as a resource consents officer, her passion is dance and performing arts. As part of her ongoing development in the arts, Chantal has graduated from the Kristen Stewart School of Make-up with a diploma in make-up artistry. Congratulations Chantal.

Congratulations also to Quinn Tainui Lance Johnsen, who plays under 10 rugby for Kiwi Club in Hokitika. He also plays under 10 league for Hokitika Taipos. Quinn won player of the year for the under 10 Kiwi team. He also received the most outstanding player of the year award in his under 10 league team. Quinn was selected for the under 10 West Coast rugby team, which played Buller twice and won both games. Quinn was also selected for the West Coast under 9 league team to play in Christchurch in October. Quinn is the son of Miriama Blacktopp and Lance Johnsen. He is also mokopuna of Gordon and Iris Weaver and great-moko of Hector William Tuhuru Tainui and Te Maori Raukawa of Arahura. [Read more…]

On the sporting front

Congratulations to Tuhawaiki McDonald and Hemi Williams, who have been selected for the Marlborough Under 13 representative rugby team. Prospective Tasman Makos for sure – sorry Mr Blackadder.

Also a big shout out to Tapiha Allen, who came second in the shot put at last month’s South Island Secondary Schools Athletics championship in Nelson. He is now able to compete at the national event in Dunedin in December. A fantastic achievement Tapiha. We look forward to bigger things in the future – if not in 2016, then maybe the 2020 Olympics.
