Hīkoi Waewae launch

On Saturday 27 August we launched ‘Hīkoi Waewae’ at Arahura Marae. It was well-attended with over 40 whānau present to support the kaupapa throughout the course of the day. Hīkoi Waewae is a walking/hiking/tramping rōpū based in Te Tai Poutini. During our hīkoi we will be learning mātauranga Māori including whakapapa, tikanga, karakia, te reo, ngā hua o te ngahere, and mihi pepehā.

We have incorporated the following values into our kaupapa. Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga, Kotahitanga and Whānau Ora. Our aim is to reconnect with our whenua by walking in the footsteps of our tūpuna. To regain a sense of connection and belonging. Experience wellbeing through fitness and spending time in our natural environment, breathing clean fresh air and disconnecting from technology. [Read more…]

Fusion holiday programme

During the school holidays Waewae ran our first Fusion holiday programme for 30 tamariki at Arahura Marae.

Day 1
The programme started with a karakia to welcome everyone. They stood to do their pepeha and we sang some songs – the kids were so sharp they even learnt a new song. After lunch we taught them some Māori games.

Day 2
We were so lucky to have two beautiful kaimahi come in for the morning – Tihou Messenger Weepu and his lovely sister Katherine. They showed our kids some games such as Kī-o-Rahi, Takahia Kōhanga, Pūkana and a game called Zombie. Tihou has always been involved with our tamariki but this time it was a double combo. To have two kaiako that were pumped up and all about our tamariki was such an awesome site to see, so a huge mihi goes out to them both and we look forward to you both returning. [Read more…]

Once again the holiday programme kicked off to a good start, with kids arriving with positive vibes and beautiful smiles. Laughter filled the marae during the whole week and it was a pleasure to see them all again. This time we were down by one kaiako, Chantal Tumahai (our hip hop instructor) and it was a bit different not to have her music playing while I was prepping the kids kai. Instead two beautiful kaiako, Miriama White and Shanita Meihana stepped in to teach the kids kapa haka, which was beautiful for my ears. [Read more…]
