Over the weekend of 16-17July a contingent of keen ex-Aoraki Bound participants gathered in Huia (west Auckland) for a weekend of whakawhanaungatanga, celebration of Matariki and the awesomeness that is Aoraki Bound. It was a time to reflect on and celebrate the value of that experience in our lives, and to hear each other’s’ stories. In early July, Ngāi Tahu Whānui ki Tāmaki Makaurau held our annual mōkihi building wānanga at Arataki Visitor Centre near Titirangi in the Waitākere Ranges. Like last year, this was made possible due to the warm invitation of Riki Bennett and Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland Council), who did most of the promotion and administration and provided the venue and facilities. Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit 2015 This is a light-hearted story of how this wonderful event happened for Papa Ku and his extraordinary wife.

Two and a half years ago Bones Rissetto (the instigator) said, “Why don’t we put Kukupa forward for the New Year’s Honours list?”
