Over the Auckland Anniversary weekend, twins Jamie and Ashley Williams competed in two significant BMX racing events – the Auckland Championship and the 2016 Oceania Continental Championships – the only International event to be held in NZ in 2016.

Both Jamie and Ashley achieved podium positions in each event continuing an excellent run of form leading into the NZ National Championships at Easter. [Read more…]

Twelve months after being selected for the New Zealand U18 Water polo team to compete at the FINA Women’s Youth Water polo World Championships in Madrid, Spain, Grace Tobin was selected to represent New Zealand in the FINA Women’s Junior Water polo World Championships held in Volos, Greece in August 2015.

Congratulations to Ashley and Jamie Williams, who both represented New Zealand against Australia at Labour Weekend as part of the eight person senior male and female BMX test team. Esther Papuni (Ngāi Tahu) who featured in the October issue of Te Pānui Rūnaka, recently competed at New Zealand Judo Championships in Tauranga. Esther,10, won her under 28kg division and she also came third in the open weight category.

Ōraka Aparima congratulates one of their rising stars from the Tukuwaha whānau, Anaya Morris for playing her first season of Ripper Rugby and being named the most valuable player in her team, Beachlands Maretai U7 squad.

Kia ora tātou, I am writing to give you an update on my gymnastics journey since Arowhenua kindly supported me for the Singapore competition I attended in November 2014.

During that time, I was at a lower level (step 9), whereas this year I have progressed up to step 10 where there are more difficult requirements that require consistent scores.

I experienced a challenging obstacle in early July when I tore ligaments in my left foot while performing a double somersault on my floor exercise. This discontinued my intense training for a month. I was unable to consolidate the difficult skills I had achieved prior and it stopped me from going to the following competition in late July. However, I continued to train to the best of my ability without overdoing it. I knew I had to keep a positive attitude and accept the fact that injuries happen. I had to rest to heal. [Read more…]

Esther Papuni,10 of Tāmaki Makaurau, has been doing Judo for just over a year and has been winning all the major tournaments in her junior girls under 28kg weight class, as well as taking out a gold in the junior girls open weight class (36kg +).

Esther holds titles in her weight class from the Waikato Bay of Plenty competition, open Auckland international competition and North Island championships. She is a yellow belt and is of Māori (Ngāi Tahu, Whakatōhea), Samoan, English and Scottish descent. [Read more…]

After many years of being dormant, the Port Softball Club entered three teams in the local Southland tee-ball competition. These teams were the tio’s U7 team and two U9 teams, the tītī’s and the taniwha’s. [Read more…]

Our little Mihiroa Pauling (Ngāti Waewae, Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki) drew on some of her Puketeraki whakapapa to represent strongly at the South Island Junior Surf Lifesaving Championships held at Waikouaiti in late January.

Mihiroa took out four gold medals for U11 beach flags and sprints as well as U12 mixed beach relay and mixed Cameron Relay with her Waimairi club mates. [Read more…]

The Makaawhio tent at the Kūmara Races was well attended, with whānau visiting throughout the day. Dressed for the occasion and with the usual sumptuous array of kai, good company and a few good punts the day was enjoyed by everyone.

A few days later, we set up a tent for the first time at the Hokitika Races. It was an afternoon event with heaps of activities to keep both the tamariki and pakeke engaged. It was a great way to spend another sunshine-filled day and to support another local event. [Read more…]

This year Ōraka Aparima Waka Ama entered the Waka Te Tasman event at Kaiteriteri as a mixed crew. Most of the crew departed Invercargill on Wednesday 12 November at 4.30am to begin the journey north.

We arrived in Kaiteriteri on Thursday 13 November and had booked an awesome holiday home, which looked out over the Kaiteriteri beach and bay. [Read more…]

In 2015, our rangatahi and community will be running regular exercise trainings every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at the old school complex in Grimness St, Karitāne.

Our main kaupapa is to support rangatahi on their journey to fitness and to learn how to cook healthy kai after a good training session. Come and take part if you are looking at doing some physical activity. Mauri ora whānau.

Rulon Nutira was recently part of the New Zealand Māori Rugby League team that played two games in Brisbane last month. The team comfortably won both games.
They won 50-10 against a Queensland Māori representative squad– and 46-22 against a Queensland Murri Indigenious team. Rulon has now joined the St George Illawara Dragons squad and is training hard as they prepare themselves for the 2015 season of rugby league. [Read more…]

Ngāi Tahu – Ngāti Waewae descendant Danny Levi, has signed with National Rugby League club (NRL) Newcastle Knights.

Danny is the great-grandson of Raymond Lousich and his father is Daniel Levi (Snr).

Danny started playing rugby league for the Randwick club in Lower Hutt and also played in representative Orca sides.

In 2013, he signed a contract with Newcastle Knights and was made captain of their Holden Cup under 20s side. Danny, the youngest player (now aged 18) in the team, led the Knights to the 2014 minor premiership and later he was named in the 2014 Holden Cup team. To cap off his NRL year, the Knights extended his contract for a further two years from 2015. [Read more…]

Congratulations also to Adrianna Reiri. Adrianna, 15, has played representative sport at Wairarapa College, in Masterton since she was eight.

Her parents Diana and Russell Reiri are very proud of her sporting achievements. Adrianna has played for Wai-Bush and has been a member of the Under 11 and Under 18 hockey teams. This year she was also a member of the 1st XI girls’ hockey team squad and was named the star player for 2012, 2013, and 2014. [Read more…]
