In February my Mum Rowena Fulham (Ngāi Tahu – Ngāti Irakehu) completed Aoraki Bound – although, “completing” doesn’t do it justice – she absolutely smashed it. Her latest achievement isn’t a surprise to me because she has never had a limit in place as to what she will do. It’s what I admire most about her. Seven years ago I had the opportunity to take part in Aoraki Bound myself. My experience didn’t quite go to plan. There was an emergency helicopter ride and a flight to Christchurch from Greymouth in a somewhat questionable plaster cast on a broken arm, and equally questionable hospital gown. So since then, I’ve been ‘that Sarah.’ It’s nice to hear the general response has become, “Oh, you’re Rowena’s Sarah.” I walk a little taller now, that’s the gift Mum has given me. She carried me with her in February – so in a way I got to get a little closer to that finish line. Below is Mum’s experience in her own words. I hope her words encourage many more Ngāi Tahu whānau to take on the challenge of Aoraki Bound. Nā Sarah Fulham. [Read more…]

Just before we broke for Christmas, Awarua Synergy Ltd had some of their workers down installing solar panels on the roof of Te Rourou Whakatipuranga Early Childhood Centre and early January the digger was out the back of the marae working on the area for the wind turbines base to be concreted.

Both these energy sources, funded by Awarua Rūnanga, will help to reduce the energy bills for the centre and marae. Photos of the soon to be installed wind turbine will be published in a future issue. [Read more…]

Last year, we started working to update our database in preparation for the completion of our electoral ballot process, which will elect the Makaawhio appointment committee made up of seven members.

The Makaawhio appointment committee is responsible for the recruitment and recommendation for appointment of our Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu representative, which is a three-year appointment.

As we have in the past, we will be running a dual process and calling for nominations for the Makaawhio appointment committee and applications for the committee to consider for the Makaawhio representative to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu. [Read more…]

On 31 December 2015 at 11am, whānau gathered at our marae to celebrate the marriage of Miriama and Lance Johnsen – the first wedding to be held at our marae.

Whānau enjoyed kapa haka while feasting on a variety of kaimoana dishes.

Amber and Ari walked their mother up the ātea (aisle) to give her away to her new husband who was waiting patiently for his wife to be on the mahau.

A huge mihi to all the whānau and friends who travelled from afar to this wonderful occasion. Also, Miriama and Lance would like to give a big thanks to Te Rua Mason and Jackie Breeze for going over and above their expectations – ngā mihi nui ki a kōrua. [Read more…]

A perfectly still and sunny day marked the official opening of the Rod Donald Hut just below Waipuna on Saturday 7 November, in the takiwā of Kāti Irakehu and Kāti Makō.

It was ten years to the day that Rod Donald’s life was cut tragically short and his father, David, wife, Nicola Shirlaw and daughters, Zoe, Holly and Emma were all in attendance to commemorate the passionate environmentalist and Green Party MP that the hut is named for, and to celebrate the Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust’s work in purchasing and fitting out the hut for public use.
