KMK Kāika Reo Profile

The Moeraki Reo Group began as a whānau initiative in 2011, formed to bring te reo Māori classes to Moeraki via regular wānanga. Inspired by the success of our reo champions, the whānau sought assistance to bring te reo back to the marae. With support from Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Moeraki was able to secure the delivery of Akona te Reo, a level 5 Certificate in Māori Language for whānau. The whānau were elated to learn that their efforts would yield a recognised qualification and that the tutors for the programme were our own, Hana O’Regan and Justin Tipa. [Read more…]

Whānau Haereka are opportunities for families to spend time together strengthening their te reo Māori bonds between te reo speaking families and building friendships between parents and between tamariki in te reo Māori. These haereka are usually held over a weekend at various locations throughout Te Waipounamu and are centred around providing family friendly activities.

This year we have an increasing number of whānau initiatives associated with Kotahi Mano Kāika. We are planning on having a whānau haereka for new puna and those whānau who are actively engaged with KMK events at a beginners level, as well as our usual whānau haereka – total immersion styles for those whānau committed to raising their tamariki with te reo as a first language in the home. If you are interested in finding out more about our whānau haereka please contact Victoria Weatherall – [email protected] or 0800 KAI TAHU.

So what does a usual day at Kura Reo involve?
Early morning exercise/zumba in te reo Māori for those who are interested, followed by breakfast and karakia
