A group of Kāi Tahu ki Ōtaki were part of the Kāi Tahu contingent that went to Te Papa on 27 May to welcome back ancestral remains. Karanga Aotearoa repatriation programme brought 60 kōiwi/tūpuna back from around the world.

The tūpuna were from many parts of Aotearoa and Rēkohu, including a tupuna from Waikouaiti, Puketeraki. It was an emotional occasion and bought a sense of closure for these tūpuna who have been housed in museums around the world and can now be at peace in their own whenua.
