The KMK reo awards – Te Hokowhitu Toa o te reo – Our Champions of te reo. This year’s KMK reo awards recognise, encourage and celebrate our te reo champions – those who are making an outstanding contribution to the regeneration of te reo Māori within the Kāi Tahu takiwā, Te Waipounamu.

There are different categories from Papatipu Rūnaka reo champions, composers and whānau commitment to kaiwhakaako.

Nominations for the various categories are open to all New Zealand citizens however some of the categories are restricted to Kāi Tahu tribal members.

A pānui with further details including the nomination process will be distributed to all Papatipu Rūnaka and relevant community networks in due course.

Kaimahi hou

Nau mai, tauti mai Talia ki tō tātou kāhui kaimahi. During the summer break, Talia Ellison will be joining the Dunedin KMK team as a KMK Assistant. She will support us by helping to prepare and plan for upcoming KMK wānaka reo and events. Talia has whakapapa to both Ōtākou and Kaikōura. She has completed a Bachelor of Arts in Māori and Indigenous Development at the University of Otago and will be enrolling in an honours programme in Māori next year. [Read more…]

With the New Year approaching many people will set their New Year resolutions – what an opportune time to set some te reo goals. Kia Kūrapa ki Awarua will be the first beginner to intermediate wānaka of the New Year – Friday 30 January (5pm) until Sunday 1 February (2pm). Papakāika Reo Fund

The Papakāika Reo Fund is a Kotahi Mano Kāika (KMK) initiative that supports Papatipu Rūnaka to develop te reo pathways within their Papakāika community. The Papakāika Reo Fund provides targeted, financial assistance to be used towards the te reo development of registered Ngāi Tahu members.

The fund will give preference to Papatipu Rūnaka who have set a language plan focused on the development, proficiency and intergenerational transmission of te reo.

KMK funding

Kia kūrapa. The last funding round for 2014 closes on the 31 October. We currently have three funds available for individuals, whānau and cluster groups to develop their te reo Māori.

Kā manukura o te reo
This fund can provide intermediate to advanced Kāi Tahu learners and speakers of te reo with targeted financial assistance to further develop their Māori language proficiency. Participants can apply for up to $5,000. [Read more…]

Tātou ki te Whutupōro ki Ōtepoti – Te tauwhāika o te Toka

On Saturday 24 May, whānau from Ōtautahi, Ōtepoti and Waihola gathered in Dunedin to spend time together, to celebrate te reo and support their teams in the great southern rugby battle, Highlanders v Crusaders.

Whānau met at Moana Pool and the morning was spent swimming, hydro sliding and making friends. This event was for te reo enthusiasts of all levels and it was inspiring for whānau to meet other whānau, who shared this common passion. Those who converse in te reo daily were examples for those whānau who are still striving with and learning the language. People were thankful for the opportunity to practice our tikaka of whanaukataka, manaakitaka and kotahitaka. [Read more…]

KMK Kāika Reo Funding

Te Puna Reo o Ngā Mata Riki
Is a group of te reo speaking whānau based in Ōtautahi Christchurch who meet regularly to support each other in maintaining Te Reo Māori as the first language in the home. Next year we will continue our regular activities:

  • Weekly activities each Friday from 10am– 12:30pm. Fridays are mainly attended by one adult from each family with their pre-school children
  • Whole whānau activities on last Sunday of each month from 10am–1pm.
