At the beginning of May a group of Otago University Geology students who are taking the Geog 380 field research studies paper participated in a week long field trip to Bluff to interview community leaders, local people and members of local community groups.

During their visit they based themselves out of the rūnaka office where many of their interviews took place.
The purpose of the project is to get an understanding on what community based action is happening to rejuvenate Bluff. The team investigated peoples’ perception of Bluff and the potential for community based development. [Read more…]

Bluff 2024 update

The Bluff 2024 Rejuvenation group continues to work steadily working on a number of projects in the Bluff township. The 2016 Oyster Festival is fast approaching and once again Bluff will be inundated with people from near and far to indulge in our local delicacy. In the lead up to this festival, the 2024 rejuvenation group is intending, weather permitting, to undergo further work around the ever popular “Bluff” entrance sign, as well as planting and maintenance along the stretch of adopted highway leading into Bluff.

The Ocean Beach lookout area is also thriving due to the consistent efforts of the 2024 rejuvenation group and the owner/caretakers, Dave and Raewyn. At Easter a local couple chose to have their wedding reception at this spot, which proved to be a fabulous choice and generated new fans for the work being done and more positive encouragement.

The work done by this small hardworking team has been outstanding, but they need new volunteers to help out. They extend an invitation to anyone living in the Bluff area to get involved, whether it’s time, ideas, skills, resources or donations of plants and materials. They would love to expand their active membership so that they can tackle more projects in shorter timeframes. Te Rau Aroha Marae continues to support the 2024 rejuvenation group and their monthly meetings are held there on the first Monday of the month starting at 7pm.

The team is small and dedicated and very proud of its achievements around the town but could do with a few more volunteers. So keep any eye out for upcoming working bee dates and come and join them.

You can also contact Steve Mitchell on: 021 127 9224 or Tammi Topi on: 027 491 2179. Bluff 2024 Rejuvenation also have a Facebook page: ‘Bluff 2024’ or email: [email protected]

Awarua Synergy at Te Rau Aroha Marae

The Awarua Synergy team hosted Hon. Te Ururoa Flavell and Māori Party officials at Te Rau Aroha Marae on 27 January, where they checked out the energy-efficient solutions installed over the years by Awarua Synergy. This started with replacing old fan heaters with heat pumps, LED lighting and installing a solar system and a small wind turbine. The Māori Party are very keen to follow the marae and rūnaka energy efficient installations. For more information and photos please go to Awarua Synergy’s website: www.awaruasynergy.co.nz

Tio and Tītī season

The Tio and Tītī seasons have commenced. Let’s hope both prove bountiful for the harvesters and to those that partake in these wonderful delicacies, yummy.

Awarua whānau hosted a delegation of indigenous Alaskans who were taking part in the Ngāi Tahu Tribal Economies wānaka in February.

Whānau had the pleasure of meeting, talking and listening to Manny Jules (elder of Secwepemc), Mike LeBourdais (chief, Secwepemc), Liz Medicine Crow (Haida, Tingit Alaska), Robert Miller (Eastern Shawnee, Chief Justice) and Warren-Maruk Jones (Alaska).

Attendees enjoyed the discussion and it stimulated much kōrero and thought around tribal economies and inter-generational wealth. It prompted us to ask the question, “What does this look like in our takiwā?” [Read more…]

Just before we broke for Christmas, Awarua Synergy Ltd had some of their workers down installing solar panels on the roof of Te Rourou Whakatipuranga Early Childhood Centre and early January the digger was out the back of the marae working on the area for the wind turbines base to be concreted.

Both these energy sources, funded by Awarua Rūnanga, will help to reduce the energy bills for the centre and marae. Photos of the soon to be installed wind turbine will be published in a future issue. [Read more…]

Kaumātua Christmas lunch

2 December, rolled around and it was an extremely hot day for the kaumātua lunch at Te Rau Aroha Marae. The wharekai was full with excitement and chatter. The meal was wonderful as was the entertainment by Bluff Schools’ senior kapa haka rōpū and the tamariki from Te Rourou Whakatipuranga Early Childhood Centre.

Christmas at Bluff

Debbie Fife put Gail and I on the spot about entering the Christmas tree competition for businesses and organisations when we went into the Bluff Service Centre late last year.

Initially we tackled the project with enthusiasm but as the year came to a close opportunities to put together a tree started to fade and then it was the week of the event.

Gail and I madly rushed around Bluff, Greenpoint, Greenhills and Ōmaui with a truckload of tamariki looking for natural resources to create our tree.

A few hours hard work went into putting together our tree and then dismantling it for reassembling the next morning at the oyster festival site.

The weather gods on 19 December, were kind to the organisers and the day was glorious and the atmosphere and entertainment awesome. Santa’s appearance put a smile on everyone’s faces.
