He pātai nui tēnei…kei whea te raumati?

Here on Poutini we could be forgiven for thinking summer has all but passed us by. Apart from the odd visit from Tama-nui-te-raki, we have been hit with rain and wintery blasts and that’s all before the weather bomb exploded, letting loose so much rain – not even the Poutini could handle the volume.

We have a few catch up stories from 2016 to share this month. We have also had some great celebrations already this year, in what is shaping up to be another busy one.

Tai Poutini Polytechnic Exhibition

On 4 November 2016, the local Polytechnic exhibited the the work of the latest cohort of certificate and diploma students in their hardstone and jade carving course. Makaawhio kaumātua supported the occasion with our Upoko, Richard Wallace providing a karakia. Congratulations to Josey Coyle, Tutoko Wallace-Jones and Josh Tamainu Pu who won awards. Certificate students Josey and Josh were recognised as the most improved (the award Tutoko won last year), and Tutoko was acknowledged for being the Pāpā Bear – tino kaitautoko o te rōpū supporting and helping other students with their mahi and designs, and holding the fort on a couple of occasions. Well done everyone, with a special acknowledgement of Josh (mokopuna of Nan Pu) and Tutoko, two Kāti Māhaki ki Makaawhio descendants creating another generation of kaiwhakairo pounamu. Ka mau te wehi.

Marae donations

Members have been asking how they can contribute to our marae when they live far away. One way is to make automatic payments into the marae bank account. If this is something you would like to do please note the following details:

We have several whānau that have been contributing small but regular payments since the marae opened in 2005. Others have made one-off payments and irregular payments as they want. The amount and frequency of payment is up to you.

Winter is firmly entrenched here on the coast. Although we are not alone in experiencing the icy blasts, rain and frosty mornings typical this time of year, we have also been blessed with enough sightings of Tamanuiterā to salve the spirit – and it’s hard not to be impressed by the sight of our mauka ariki and Kā Tiritiri o te Moana at this time of year, cloaked in hukarere.

It has been another couple of busy months here on Poutini with the usual round of komiti hui and meetings keeping us extra busy.

Hīkoi Whakatipu Waitai

We are inviting expressions of interest from Makaawhio members who would like to participate in our next hīkoi Whakatipu Waitai. At this stage, no date has been set as we need a threshold number of participants.

If you are considering this amazing opportunity to reconnect with the southernmost part of our rohe and our kāinga there are a couple of criteria that you need to be aware of:

• You will be required to make a contribution towards the costs of the hīkoi
• You need to be fit enough to walk the 17kms on relatively-flat formed tracks
• You need to be willing to fully participate in all aspects of the hīkoi
• Rakatahi need to be old enough to be self-sufficient and self-managing.

Please contact the office to add your name and contact details to the list. If we end up with a surplus of participants, they will be shortlisted for the next hīkoi.

Annual Wero Mātauraka Reading Challenge

The rūnaka held its annual reading challenge for Kāti Mahaki tamariki in the July school holidays. All entries needed to be in the office on 4 August and we will be announcing the winner of the major prizes very soon.

Pāmu Makaawhio

There has been good progress on our Makaawhio block since last month. Whānau driving past 855B will notice the huge improvement in the state highway fencing, with the completion of the new replacement fences making the section safe for the new stock being delivered.

Congratulations to Nathan Wilson, who has been contracted to manage the day-to-day requirements of the farm.

Makaawhio representative electoral ballot process

The recently elected Makaawhio Appointment Committee, Paul Madgwick, Marie Mahuika-Forsyth, Terry Scott, Stuart Barr, Bronwyn Te Koeti, Paul Wilson and Barry Rochford have held their first meeting. They have confirmed the selection and appointment process and applicant interviews will be held next month. An announcement will be made, once they have completed their process and the appointment has been confirmed by our rūnanganui.

Members will soon receive a letter with information on how to access the members-only portion of our rūnanga website. It has taken us some time to update our site and there are still areas to be added, but we hope members enjoy the new look site.

Hui rūnanganui – executive meeting
Our next hui rūnanganui will be held on 11 June in Hokitika at 9.30am. Our next hui will be at the marae on 12-14 August, on Friday evening at 7.30pm, reconvening Saturday morning. For catering purposes, please let the office know if you will be attending.

Mr ‘Explorer’ Douglas
A range of events will be happening in Hokitika over Queen’s Birthday weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Westland explorer, surveyor and map-maker, Charlie Douglas. This will include an exhibition, walks and a social get together at the Hokitika Regent Theatre on the Saturday.

Hākari kaumātua
This year we will be holding our kaumātua dinner at the marae on Saturday 13 August. Details will be advised next month.

Memorandum signing

In addition to the countless meetings and hui over the past month, we signed off our updated MOU with the West Coast DHB on 31 March. The agreement with Poutini Ngāi Tahu Rūnanga is a partnership and relationship document, which supports how we work together. Our manawhenua committee, Tatau Pounamu were there to support the signing.

Electoral ballot process

By now most of you should have received ballot papers to vote for the seven rūnanga members who will make up the Makaawhio Appointment Committee, charged with selecting our Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio Representative to our tribal council, Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio. A record thirteen members were nominated.

The ballot process is carried out independently and closes on 22 April 2016. In line with the ballot process, last month we notified that our membership would be closed to new members from 18 April 2016 to 20 May 2016, and if required extended for a further period to 15 July 2016.

As the Postal Ballot process will close from 22 April 2016 there is no longer a need to close membership to new members beyond that date. Therefore, membership applications received after 18 April, will be held for processing on 23 April 2016.

The Makaawhio Appointment Committee membership will be advised once the outcome of ballot process is known.

Hui Rūnanganui (Executive Meeting) Schedule 2016

Makaawhio Film Night 24 April 2016

We will be holding a film evening, with a mixture of recent and historical rūnanga videos and movies at our Marae on Sunday 24th April. The night before ANZAC Day, “movie night” will kick off at 6.30pm in Kaipo and no doubt will provide a few laughs, some tears and another great opportunity for whakawhanukataka!

We will again be marking ANZAC Day at our Marae on 25 April, with a commemorative service, starting at 10.30am at our Marae.

Māhaki Mātauraka scholarships

Last month, the rūnaka launched our new scholarships focused on rakatahi development, leadership and building cultural capacity.

Applications are now being called for the 2016 school year for our pūtea tautoko – ‘Whaia te Mātauraka.’

The scholarships are open to students attending or intending to attend secondary boarding school (especially Māori boarding schools) and agreeing to a set of criteria aimed at demonstrating commitment to kaupapa Māori, our rūnaka and iwi.

If you wish to see the criteria and/or lodge an application, please contact the office urgently, as there will be a very short application period.

Christmas office hours

Our office will close on Monday 21 December and will reopen 11 January 2016. Any messages or queries made during this time, will be answered as soon as the office opens.

He pānui

The whānau of John William and Hera (Te Koeti) Bannister are in the process of replacing the headstone of John and his daughter Margaret Sampson who are buried side-by-side in the Hokitika cemetery. We would like to involve as many of their extended whānau as possible. Annual Christmas pool party
We held our annual Christmas pool party on Sunday 13 December at the Hokitika Centennial Pool. Whānau were invited to join us at the pool for a fun-filled, politics free afternoon with their tamariki and rakatahi. There were games, prizes and giveaways as well as an early visit from Hana Kōkō.

Kūmara Races
Mark 9 January 2016 in your calendars and come and join us at the Kūmara Races. Put on your glad rags, bring your own food and drinks and come and have a fun day. You’ll find our tent close to the finish line.

Marae open day
This year, to acknowledge Waitangi Day, we will be holding an open day at the marae on 6 February. The day will start with a pōwhiri around 10.30am and will end with poroporoaki around 5.30pm at the latest.
We have a number of workshops planned, along with a hāngī to feed the masses. The day is open to everyone, if you want to come and spend the long weekend with us, Te Tauraka Waka a Māui will be the place to be.

Hokitika Races
The Hokitika Races will be held on 13 January (mid-week), following the Kūmara Races. The Hokitika Races are a half-day event starting at 10am. We’ll have a tent and the barbeque, so bring your own food and drinks and join us for another day at the races.

Tēnā anō tātou katoa, the spring weather continues to bring rain and warm balmy weather in equal measures, with the odd wintery blast as well. Naturally, none of this has deterred the whitebaiters and most whānau have had at least one feed of fresh bait.On the plus side, of course, Te Tai o Poutini is looking lush and green, and everything is thriving.

We have had a busy month here on Te Tai o Poutini, hosting and attending numerous hui. Labour Weekend saw a number of our members head home to Mahitahi for our Hui-ā-Tau (AGM) held on the Saturday. It’s always great when whānau return home to our marae and even better when the weather is spectacular – even if you end up spending much of it in a hui.

Recent farewell

This month, we farewelled West Coast Department of Conservation (DoC) conservator Mike Slater, who we have worked with for many years.

Mike has been appointed as the Deputy Director General. He will take a piece of poutini with him, not just in his heart, but also for his desk – in the form of a taoka pounamu.

His replacement, Mark Davies, has been welcomed by ourselves and Ngāti Waewae and we look forward to building a strong relationship with him as we all get to know each other.

Tēnā anō tātou katoa, Poutini continues to experience a mixed bag of weather. Everything’s looking really green and there’s been enough balmy, sun filled days to ensure no-one is going stir crazy from being indoors too long.

This month is already gearing up to be busy, with a few rōpū booked into our marae. Our rūnanganui had their hui in Hokitika on 11 April and on 25 April, we held our ANZAC Day service at our marae. This year’s commemorative service was especially special as we acknowledged the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, which proved so costly for everyone involved. New book released

Recently published, Marae: Te Tatau Pounamu by Muru, Robin and Sam Walters is a stunning pictorial book, which tells the story of marae around Aotearoa and Te Waipounamu.  

We were thrilled that of the hundreds of marae, big and small that the authors visited, our marae, Te Tauraka Waka a Māui and it is one of 21 featured in the book.
