In February 2016, I visited the property with members of my family. I saw that the property was in poor state. I know this was out of character of the lessee. On 1st June 2016 I wrote to the Māori Trustee the Responsible Trustee requesting information on the poor state of the property. No response was received. A second letter was sent to the Trustee requesting a meeting of owners to establish new Trustees.

The Trustee did not respond to my letters but did call a meeting of owners which was held in July 2016. The minutes of that meeting have not been made available.

My recollections of the key points are:

• The lease ended in November 2015.
• The lessee received a discounted rate on his lease in order to bring the property up to a good state of repair.
• The lessee has not paid the rent on the property for the final five years of his lease.
• The lessee has not maintained the property leaving it in a poor condition.
• The Māori Trustee has not informed the owners that the lease had terminated.
• The Māori Trustee did not know that the rent had NOT been paid.
• The Māori Trustee had not been aware that the land was NOT being maintained.
• The Māori Trustee had requested 12 months to recover the money owed and remedy the situation.

The following matters remain unresolved from the meeting of owners:

• The cost of bringing the land to an acceptable state at termination of the lease.
• An explanation of the breakdown in the relationship between the Responsible Trustee and the lessee.
• An explanation of why it took five years for the Māori Trustee to notice the rent was NOT being paid.
• An explanation as to why the Māori Trustee had not ensured the property had degraded to its current poor state.
• A plan to maintain the property in the interim period.

We request that an informal meeting of owners is convened to discuss the issues over the property:

We have had another busy month here on Poutini with the usual round of komiti hui and meetings keeping us extra busy. We were pleased to host Heather and Maurice Manawatu on our side of the motu. Our whānau had the opportunity to experience their hospitality in Kaikōura and we were more than happy to reciprocate, sharing our takiwā and kōrero with them, as they had with us.

We are excited to be using their feedback to develop our own experience right in the heart of our takiwā. Watch this space.

Everyone has been counting down to the start of whitebait season on 1 September, and by the time you read this we would have had our first (and second, and third…) feed of fresh bait.

A big hello to our whānau who are in Australia, the North Island and far away overseas if you get Te Pānui Rūnaka, a very big hello, ngā mihi aroha kia koutou katoa whānau. I hope you are all keeping in contact with your whānau.

What’s been happening at the marae? Lots of little hui, cruising along, a lot of good things are in the pipeline.

One of our whānau members has brought in a story about her father. Many of us know him as Uncle Rongo or Rongopai and he has always been associated with the Tītī Islands. He was a character, he loved his family, and nothing would stop him from going to the Tītī Islands. A lot of our whānau who are still going there in their 70s and 80s never shy away from hard work. Thank you Merania Spencer – there’s a lot more about this man but you would need a book. Cheers Spencer whānau, arohanui.

Well, that’s it from me take care. I hope you are all warm and if you are not, make sure you get hold of family — stay warm kā pai. Waihōpai Rūnaka sends big love to you all — arohanui whānau. Kā kite. Nā Squirrel on the Hill. Mauri ora.

Paterson whānau visit

Te hokinga ki te kainga
We recently had the pleasure of welcoming home Rawi Paterson (son of Wiki Paterson née Ellison) and members of the Paterson whānau, including his late sister Sally Bannister’s daughters and whānau. Rawi and the whānau, many of whom are based in the Napier area, spent several days getting reacquainted with special people and places before gathering at Hui te Rangiora Church and urupā for an unveiling. It was a time filled with laughter and tears, reminiscing and plenty of singing — all the ingredients of a successful visit.

Winter is firmly entrenched here on the coast. Although we are not alone in experiencing the icy blasts, rain and frosty mornings typical this time of year, we have also been blessed with enough sightings of Tamanuiterā to salve the spirit – and it’s hard not to be impressed by the sight of our mauka ariki and Kā Tiritiri o te Moana at this time of year, cloaked in hukarere.

It has been another couple of busy months here on Poutini with the usual round of komiti hui and meetings keeping us extra busy.

Hīkoi Whakatipu Waitai

We are inviting expressions of interest from Makaawhio members who would like to participate in our next hīkoi Whakatipu Waitai. At this stage, no date has been set as we need a threshold number of participants.

If you are considering this amazing opportunity to reconnect with the southernmost part of our rohe and our kāinga there are a couple of criteria that you need to be aware of:

  • You will be required to make a contribution towards the costs of the hīkoi
  • You need to be fit enough to walk the 17kms on relatively-flat formed tracks
  • You need to be willing to fully participate in all aspects of the hīkoi
  • Rakatahi need to be old enough to be self-sufficient and self-managing.

Please contact the office to add your name and contact details to the list. If we end up with a surplus of participants, they will be shortlisted for the next hīkoi.

Rā whānau

Sade Elle Gemmell celebrated her 21st birthday on 30 July. Her two sisters, Mariah and Aaliyah, decorated their grandparents’ home in Mangamaunu with balloons, flyers and ‘Happy Birthday’ streamers in Sade’s favourite colour, pink. Sade’s koro put a hāngī down and home-baked steamed pudding, pavlova and champagne were on the menu. The German chocolate cake was enjoyed by all. (For those who like baking, this recipe came from Māori Channel’s Cook-Up programme – it’s a must try).

Sade performed waiata with her Nana on the ukulele and whānau enjoyed songs, new and old from YouTube. Sade was winner of the ‘2014 Hollywood Immersive Contest’, her prize was a trip to Los Angeles. She was unable to go however, as she became hapū with her beautiful pēpi, Azayliah Grace.

Jamie rowed in three finals in the Maadi Cup Regatta in Twizel, winning silver, 6th and 7th placings for Collegiate College in Wanganui. Jamie lost her Dad John suddenly in May this year. John was well-known for his outdoor pursuits such as the Coast to Coast. Jamie and John had a close and special relationship. During the last week of July, Jamie’s Mother Jo Ann (Gemmell) received the bronze award for ‘Best Builder’ in the Blenheim, Nelson and West Coast regions on behalf of Harris Construction Builders Ltd – a personal congratulations for both their efforts in the company.

Calling waka ama enthusiasts

Te Rūnaka o Awarua has an under-used waka and wants to hear from any person over the age of 13, in the Bluff area, who wants to give waka ama a go. The main criteria being that people must be able to swim 100 metres.

Administrative professional day

Ōraka Aparima Rūnaka staff were recently privileged to attend the administrative professionals day held at the Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill. The day consists of a luncheon and a celebrity guest speaker. In previous years we have seen the likes of Kevin Biggar of first crossings fame, Josh Emmett and Robyn Malcolm. The speaker this year was none other than respected television journalist Mike McRoberts. Until recently Mike was presenting the News Hub programme with Hilary Barry. He is possibly best known for travelling to the world’s most dangerous destinations to cover disasters and armed conflict.

Mike gave the audience a fascinating insight into the what life is like of the front line of various war zones. He also spoke very frankly about the challenges he has faced most recently in the workplace with the resignation of Hilary Barry. It is clear that Mike is a principled man who cares very deeply for his friends and colleagues. He was a truly inspirational speaker and took the time to walk round the tables speaking to as many people as he could.

Flag poles

Ōraka Aparima Rūnaka now have flag poles at both the office (175 Palmerston St, Riverton) and at Takutai o te Tītī Marae. The New Zealand flag and The Tino Rangatiratanga flag were flown at Takutai o te Tītī Marae during the Kī o Rahi tournament.

Volunteers

We are always looking for volunteers to help out with the variety of projects and commitments that we have. There are many diverse roles that we need help with, from representation on boards or appointment panels and helping with bird transfers, to assisting at the marae or working in the nursery or the wetlands. If you are keen to play a more active role within the rūnaka please contact us here at the office to discuss the options.
