The Minister for the Environment, Nick Smith recently visited Waihao Marae to announce the funding granted to Waihao under Te Mana O Te Wai fund.

This funding programme was secured in partnership with the Māori Party and initiated by Marama Fox, who also attended the announcement at Waihao. The funding is to assist Waihao in working to improve mahinga kai values in the Wainono Lagoon and also to enhance their capacity as environmental advocates. Environment Canterbury are supporting Waihao in the management of this project and were represented by Commissioner Tom Lambie and Chief Operating Officer Don Rule. Waimate Mayor Craig Rowley also attended along with many local community members and whānau.
