We have been enjoying spectacular weather here on Te Tai o Poutini, with just enough rain to keep things from looking too dry. Te wā raumati is an excellent time for whanaukataka – for strengthening whakapapa bonds in fun and relaxing environments.

After ending the year with events for the young and the older, 2015 started with a couple of West Coast staples – the Kūmara Races on 10 January, Hokitika Races on 14 January and the Hokitika Sand Dunes Golf Classic on 17 January. February is shaping up to be just as busy.

December 2014

Our Hākari Kaumātua in December was a true, “boot scooting” event. Cowboy hats, rhinestones, spurs and the occasional squaw were all the order of night. The country and western theme was a hit with our seniors, who enjoyed the chance to dress up, try out line dancing and sing the night away.

The highlight of the night, was as always, the hākari itself – this year, starters were Bruce Bay whitebait and Makaawhio venison, followed by a hāngī main course with the added attraction of a delicious traditional Christmas hot ham and two desserts.

Our tamariki and mokopuna were next in line with our annual pool party at the local Hokitika Centennial Pool. Pool fun on a hot day, followed by a BBQ, pressie time and sugary treats made for a great afternoon.
