A pair of champions – reclaiming the takutai
Great day for our tamariki at the Canterbury Surf Lifesaving Champs held on Sunday 3 March at New Brighton Beach. Mihiroa Pauling (nō Taumutu me Ngāti Waewae) and Te Kaio Cranwell (nō Wairewa) came away with seven medals. Together they helped their club Waimairi, take out the cup for the top club overall. Mihiroa beat around 20 other girls to win the 8-year-old beach flag competition and came second in the 8-year-old mixed beach sprint relay with Te Kaio. Te Kaio blitzed the field to win gold in the 7-year-old beach sprint, came a close second in his flag competition and secured two bronze medals, one for the 7-year-old mixed beach sprint relay and the other for his board relay.
